Instructor Information

The Department of Early Childhood, Multilingual, and Special Education requires that all students have direct experiences with educational research. These experiences are a part of the following courses: EDU 203, ECE 250, EDSP 411, EDSP 432, EDSP 471, EDRL 474, ESP 701, ESP 730, ESP 722, ESP 771, ECE 709, and TESL 752. Students can either participate as subjects in experiments or complete article summaries.

Requirements

The three-credit research requirement is mandatory for all students in these courses. Failure to complete the three credits, will result in a loss of points used to assign the student’s grade for the class. There are no exceptions Please note that the three research credits equals 100 points in the class. So, each credit earned equals 33.3 points.

Experiments will vary in the number of credits offered (0.5-3 credits) and the article summaries are worth one credit each. Students can do a combination of experiments and summaries to earn the three research credits. Students under the age of 18 cannot participate in experiments and can only complete article summaries.

Your role

Instructors must:

  • Inform students of the requirement in class and in the course syllabus
  • Distribute the link to the student information page and article list specific to your course
  • Refer students to the subject pool website (i.e., post the link in Canvas)
  • Remind students that, if they chose to participate in research, it is very difficult to find open experiment appointments toward the end of the semester
  • Notify students of the list of completed credits that you receive from the subject pool coordinator right away so that they can resolve any discrepancies or errors

The EMS Subject Pool Coordinator will email all students in the course and remind them of the research requirement and direct them to all information concerning completion of the requirement at the beginning of the semester.

Subject pool coordinator’s role

During the last week of classes (not final exam week), the subject pool coordinator will provide you with a list of completed credits for your students.

Student’s role

All students must register on the [SONA systems website], even if they are fulfilling all of their requirements with article summaries, so that their research credits can be tracked.

Study availability

Study availability is based on IRB requirements, researcher needs, and start and stop times of each study. If there are no studies available, it is the student’s responsibility to complete the article summaries. Please encourage students to check the list of experiments in the [SONA System] early in the semester, as experiment slots fill up quickly.

Deadlines

Credits are due by midnight (pacific) on Friday of the last week of classes (not final exam week). Any credit disputes must also be resolved by that same day.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism on article reviews will be referred to the instructors for disciplinary action. It also will be reported to the EMS department chair and the subject pool’s faculty director.

Research solicitations

The EMS Subject Pool is only for researchers in UNLV’s EMS Department. If a researcher from a different department or university contacts you, please refer them to the subject pool coordinator (ems.subjectpool@unlv.edu).

Other questions

Instructors can contact the EMS subject pool coordinator at ems.subjectpool@unlv.edu or the faculty director of the subject pool [email] with questions.

Students should review these FAQs and contact the EMS subject pool coordinator at ems.subjectpool@unlv.edu if they need additional assistance.
